John relates that the Jews did not understand the comparison. Jesus uses the pronoun "I am" which is always emphatic, precluding there was any other. To them John wrote: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. This assertion Jesus is declaring His equality with God the Father.

He is wonderful at conveying this knowledge in a way that simple and easily understandable. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: Though some rejected this revelation, others received Him and thereby became children of God. It was full of grace and truth. Who sandal strap I am not worthy to loose: To untie the strap of a sandal before foot washing was duty of the lowest slave in the house. Jesus gave them a stunning declaration of His deity and ministry. Jesus uses the pronoun "I am" which is always emphatic, precluding there was any other.

Yet Jesus noted that in a sense, John was Elijah, ministering in his office and spirit Matthew and Mark But, this being done out of the mouth of two or three witnesses, John goes on to perfection Heb. He does so admirably. The Archbishop of Los AngelesCardinal Roger Mahonyhailed him as "the most distinguished and renowned Catholic biblical scholar to emerge in this country ever" and his death, the cardinal said, was "a great loss to the Church. Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of every time that image is displayed. You shall behold Him in the midst of the throne.

This name is never used of any created being and always refers to God. He would be the one on Whom the Holy Spirit descended upon from heaven. God came to the same world He created, to the creatures made in His image, and yet the world did not know Him.

Jesus exposed their unbelief in God's word, saying if they really believed in Moses they would believe in Him, because Moses spoke of Him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live" John The Lamb of God: John used the image of the sacrificial lamb, represented many times in the Commentary on the Gospel according to Saint John book Testament.

And many believed on him there. This kept the sheep from leaving or a robber from entering. He cannot do anything that would oppose Himself. It is called the Shamash and from it one light is lit each day for the eight days. The word used in verse six, "paroimia" presents a similitude meaning using something that is similar to something else.

Jesus was offering the love of God to the Jews, but only a handful would accept Him. It is from the Talmud the Jews get their interpretation of the Old Testament.

When God called Abram in the Ur of the Chaldees, He pacifically stated that through him, meaning his descendants would all the families of the Earth be blessed "And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Jesus never hid His identity, but repeatedly by His message, miracles and statements revealed to Israel that He was God their Messiah.

Cole, R. John is a Gospel written for a specific purpose: that we might believe. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

The Jews at first received John's testimony of announcing the promised kingdom, but only for a season or short time. It commits a man. Other scholars, e.

However, I later found out that they were not reading the Old Testament Torahbut rather the Talmud. What was really going on was an attempt gracefully to retain what was salvageable from the past and to move in a new direction at the same time. Jesus was warning them of the consequences of their actions of not believing Him.
